The Bikeriders

The Bikeriders, based on Danny Lyon's 1968 photobook of the same name. Overall I did like this film, but I also felt it exposed some weaknesses in some of the stars’ acting abilities. Now this is going to be very confusing because I’m not slamming the acting in this movie. Overall it was well done, but I am going to say that most of the actors in this movie have no range. Even Tom Hardy, who used to have plenty of range, has just been the same strange guy in most of his roles over the past decade or so. Austin Butler (aside from his role in Dune 2) is basically just James Dean. He is the quintessential Rebel Without a Cause and will be typecast as such in the future. Jodi Comer is a stand out in The Bikeriders, but she’s almost too good; that accent was something to tolerate. Other standout roles in this movie were Norman Reedus, Michael Shannon and Toby Wallace. All of whom brought amazing performances and are underrated in the industry.

With that being said, I found myself relating to the characters in this film as I’ve always been a DILLIGAF punk who grew up doing the best I could in an unstable setting - a survivalist of sorts. These guys were as cool as Mike Ness shirtless at 45 on stage, dripping sweat on a 30’s Ford Roadster. Except these were all Harley Davidsons… are you hard yet?

I’m not sure this film has to be seen right away in theaters, but I would recommend seeing it at some point.
