longlegs

I don’t know how to describe this film without giving away too much plot, so I will just say this…. Go see it in theaters. Spend the money. Make the time. Go tonight, you will not be sorry. I would even go as far as to say this is in the top 5, possibly 3, of my all time favorite horror movies ever made.

Oz Perkins gives us one of the creepiest horror movies, with original lore and brilliant cinematography and acting. I might have to go see it again.

There are settings that literally make you feel the atmosphere, and at the same time do not make sense. Like a fall day with no jacket, or a cool night with a thunderstorm barreling in while dawn’s sunlight pierces through the windows. I believe this is on purpose. The film’s use of aesthetics to throw you off from what’s going on is nothing short of genius filmmaking. The cropped screen in flashbacks almost makes you feel like you’re being sucked into the screen itself.

The acting? Let me tell you, this movie has Nicolas Cage in what could be his best role. Maika Monroe gives us an Oscar-worthy performance as a neurodivergent detective, and just continues to evolve throughout the film. Even Kiernan Shipka

gives an incredible performance in her limited time on screen. I’d like to give an honorable mention to Alicia Witt, who was incredible as a pivotal point in the plot.

I can not express well enough how much this movie satisfies the need for something original in the horror genre these days. If this  film doesn’t do it for you, I’m not sure what will. It’s not just a film, it’s an experience.

If I was to find anything negative about this film, it’s that a couple of times it felt like the writers were pulling their punches, most likely due to the ratings board, but it’s not really that bad. There should be one hell of a director’s cut coming!
